Registration is Open
The theme of the 2009 SEFLIN Regional Conference is New Technologies: Libraries & Beyond. The Conference will be held on July 30, 2009, at the Kovens Conference Center on the Florida International University Biscayne Bay Campus. Registration is open to everyone.
The keynote speaker will be Marshall Breeding, Director for Innovative Technologies and Research for the Vanderbilt University Libraries. Conference sessions will cover a wide range of topics including library automation after Web 2.0, using mobile devices to support library services, and social media literacy.

Southeast Florida Library Leaders: Building the Next Generation of Service to Underserved Populations
Ten library staff members have been awarded a FSU Certificate in Leadership & Management:

More than twenty library staff members working in Southeast Florida libraries are participating in the Florida State University's Library Leadership and Management Master's program or the Certificate in Leadership & Management program. All students are receiving a full tuition scholarship.
The Southeast Florida Library Leaders: Building the Next Generation of Service to Underserved Populations project was developed by Florida State University in partnership with SEFLIN, the Broward County Library and the Miami Dade Public Library System. The project has been awarded a $559,872 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Grant from the US Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Service Opens Doors to Libraries
Five library organizations in Palm Beach County announce the launch of a new program to provide cooperative borrowing services. The Sunshine Library Card Program allows registered users to borrow materials from participating libraries.
This program is the first in Southeast Florida to demonstrate reciprocal borrowing
among academic, public, and school libraries.
The libraries participating in the Sunshine Library Card Program are:
- Florida Atlantic University Libraries
- Palm Beach Community College Libraries
- Palm Beach County Library System
- School District of Palm Beach County
- West Palm Beach Public Library

Event Cancellations
Persons attending SEFLIN events should review SEFLIN's cancellation procedures in the event of hurricanes or tropical storms. The procedures covers both 'watches' and 'warnings' issued by the National Weather Service.

SEFLIN & Partner Libraries Establish Sites Throughout the Region
SEFLIN classes, meetings and events will be held in newly rennovated training/meeting rooms located at: St. Thomas University Library in Miami Gardens; Library Learning Resources Center at the Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth; Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly Library in Boca Raton, and Broward County/Broward College Library in Coconut Creek. The use of the rooms is governed by letters of agreement between SEFLIN and the partner libraries.
In FY2007-2008, more than 3,000 library staff attended SEFLIN sponsored continuing education and training events. The staff training & meetings centers were funded in part under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Florida Department of State, State Library and Archives of Florida.
Three Libraries Join SEFLIN
The SEFLIN Board of Directors has extended Affiliate Memberships to ITT Technical Institute/Miami, the Everest Institute, and the King Library at the Society of Four Arts.
SEFLIN members libraries represent more than 300 library service locations and 3,000 library staff. SEFLIN supports library organizations
in transcending boundaries and working collaboratively to improve library services.
Online Training for Library Staff
SEFLIN has created an online training presentation for library staff using the SEFLIN Library Card Program site. The presentation runs for seven minutes and covers the basics of:

Library Staff and Supporters Honored
SEFLIN Awards were presented on February 27, 2009, to more than 100 individuals and organizations that support excellence in library services and cooperation between all types of libraries.
The SEFLIN Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr. William Miller, Dean of University Libraries at Florida Atlantic University. The SEFLIN Library Champion Award was presented to The Honorable Susan Bucher, Supervisor of Elections for Palm Beach County. The SEFLIN Star Award was presented to Dr. John Carlos Bertot, Professor & Director of the Center for Library Innovation at the University of Maryland.
Innovative Services Funded to Support Libraries
SEFLIN has been awarded $147,700 in LSTA grants by the State Library and Archives of Florida to support libraries staff in making resources more accessible to library users.
SEFLIN activities will include continuing education and training for library staff, operating Florida Library Jobs/Jobs in Florida Libraries and supporting the Florida Library Leadership Program.
Library Services and Technology Act Grants
Materials Provided to Libraries in Armenia & Iraq
Florida Atlantic University, Lynn University, Palm Beach Community College, Lighthouse Point Library, and members of the S.E. Florida Independent School Libraries Consortium have donated books, microfilm, and videotapes through the SEFLIN Gift Library Materials Program.
Project partners include the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Armenia, U.S. Army Civil Affairs, and the University of Kurdistan.
Resource Sharing Activities Funded
SEFLIN has been awarded a $240,000 grant by the State Library and Archives of Florida to support bibliographic enhancement and resource sharing between all types of Southeast Florida libraries.
Activities will include providing continuing education and training for library staff in the areas or cataloging, interlibrary loan, and preservation.

Professional Networking Service for Member Library Staff
The Library Staff Networking Directory offers an online service designed to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and professional expertise among the library staff in member libraries. More than 1,500 staff persons from the Southeast Florida region are listed in the directory.
Library staff may post a professional biography, upload photos, select job duties and professional interests, add hyperlinks to useful Web sites, upload documents and presentations, and identify contacts among the other staff persons in the Directory.
