SEFLIN Announces the Closure of Two Regional Web Portals
SEFLIN (the Southeast Florida Library Information Network) announces the closing of its MyLibraryService.org Web site and the Spanish-language companion site, MiServicodeBiblioteca.org. These two Web sites and the services that they contain will be discontinued on September 30, 2009.
These sites have played an important role in serving the Southeast Florida region, its citizens and its libraries. First developed in 2001, the MyLibraryService.org Web site served as a regional ‘Web portal’ to the libraries of Southeast Florida. As such, it provided a Directory of more than 300 library locations in the region and provided a ‘single-search’ interface for searching the catalogs of the SEFLIN member libraries. It also provided a job-posting service for the region’s libraries and information about library staff training.
The Spanish companion site, MiServiciodeBiblioteca.org, also provided a Spanish language interface to these services, plus links to third-party services to assist library staff in serving the region’s growing Hispanic population.
The two Web portals were originally developed with grant funding provided under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the State Library of Florida. SEFLIN member libraries have also contributed much guidance and support for the development and maintenance of these services over the years.
Both of these Web portals served the library community and the population of Southeast Florida well during a time when a greater presence on the World Wide Web was needed for libraries and improved library services were needed for the Spanish speaking population. These Web portals were successful in addressing these needs, so much so that they have been superseded by a number of newer and more comprehensive services. As the libraries of the region have expanded their Web services and newer online technology has emerged for locating and accessing Web based information and services, these two Web portals will no longer be supported or offered online.
Interested persons and library staff are encouraged to refer to www.seflin.org for detailed information about the ongoing services offered by SEFLIN. A new, searchable, Directory of Libraries in Southeast Florida is available there, as well as many library staff training and development opportunities.
